Kyle Nystrom has joined the TCU football staff as the linebackers coach, head coach Gary Patterson announced today.
"Kyle has an incredible knowledge of the defensive package that we run," said Patterson. "He'll be able to hit the ground running with us as we start spring drills. He's a high energy guy who comes from a great football family background. He should fit in well with our staff."
Nystrom, 36, has spent the last 13 seasons at Western Michigan, where he was the longest-tenured assistant coach on Gary Darnell's staff. He spent the past five seasons instructing the inside linebackers and also served as the special teams coach each of the past two years.
Nystrom joined the Western Michigan staff in 1989 and served three years as a part-time aide and graduate assistant before being elevated to a full-time position as outside linebackers coach in 1992.
"I'm excited to be part of the TCU football staff," said Nystrom. "What they've done with this program over the last five years has been incredible. Their defense has brought the spotlight on them from a national standpoint and I'm excited to be a part of that. It's exciting for me to have a chance to work with Gary and in the same system that we used at Western Michigan. I'm looking forward to coaching players who are bigger, stronger and faster and competing on a bigger platform," he added.
Nystrom is a 1988 graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in criminal justice and political science. He served five years on the Spartan grid staff as a student assistant coach. Upon graduation, he spent one year as a graduate assistant at Northern Michigan.
Nystrom was named team captain while playing split end and strong safety during his prep career at Centaurus High in Boulder, Colo. He was also a standout on the track, twice earning all-conference honors and qualifying for the state track meet in the 200 meters and 800 meter relay. He played hockey for 13 years in Marquette, Mich. prior to arriving in Boulder.
A native of Fargo, N.D., Kyle is the son of 1955 Michigan State All-American guard Carl "Buck" Nystrom, recognized as one of the nation's best line coaches while at Michigan State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Northern Michigan and North Dakota State.
Born March 27, 1965, Nystrom and his wife, Cherise, have a six-year old son, Logan.
