Veteran coach Dick Winder has joined the TCU football staff as the quarterbacks coach, Head Football Coach Gary Patterson announced today.
Winder, 59, has been in the coaching profession for 35 years, spending 16 years in the high school ranks and 19 years at the collegiate level. His extensive coaching background includes 13 seasons as a high school head coach, nine years as the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech University and two seasons as offensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma. His most recent stop was a two-year stint as the quarterbacks coach at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
"We've gained experience, toughness, a great recruiter and a winner in Dick Winder," said Patterson. "And you can start with winner. He's loved in this state and will be a great addition to our staff."
A native of Salt Lake City who grew up in Craig, Colo., Winder began his coaching career in 1965 as an assistant coach at Goddard (N.M.) High School. While at Goddard, he served two years as offensive coordinator before switching to defensive coordinator in 1967 and helping the team to the state title.
He soon became a head coach and eventually built a career that would result in only one losing season in 13 years as a high school head coach. Winder's high school coaching resume includes stops at Roswell High School in New Mexico and Odessa, Monahans and Abilene Cooper high schools in Texas. While head coach at Roswell from 1968 to 1970, Winder compiled a 19-11 record and was named the state's Coach of the Year in 1968. From there, he moved to Texas and was head coach and athletics director at Odessa High School from 1971- 1973, posting an 18-12 record. He spent the 1974 and '75 seasons in private business as president of Athletic Supply, Inc. in Odessa, then returned to his post at Odessa High and recorded a 19-11 record from 1976 to 1978. He earned District Coach of the Year honors in both 1971 and 1978.
His first taste of collegiate coaching came in 1979 when he was named the offensive backfield and quarterbacks at the University of New Mexico. He returned to the high school ranks the following year as head coach and athletics director at Monahans High School, logging a 20-10 record over the next three campaigns.
Winder took the head coaching post at Abilene's Cooper High School for the 1983 season, then joined the Texas Tech staff for the first time in 1984 as a defensive ends coach. He worked with Red Raiders' running backs in 1985 and defensive ends in 1986 before taking over as Tech's offensive coordinator in 1987. In his nine seasons leading the Texas Tech offensive unit, the Red Raiders established 59 school records and scored 300 or more points in a season seven times. He served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma from 1996-97, then returned to Texas Tech as the receivers coach in 1998 and 1999 before taking the position at Tarleton State.
Winder, an all-state football and basketball player in high school, claimed All-America accolades as a tight end at Mesa (Colo.) Community College. He went on to play tight end at Utah State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1964. He earned his master's degree at Colorado State in 1965.
Dick is married to Vicki, has two grown children, Greg and Peri-Ann, and one granddaughter, Presley.
