FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Volleyball (11-16, 3-8 C-USA) team fell in its final home match of the 2002 season to second-place Louisville (21-4, 10-1 C-USA) by a 3-0 count. The Frogs honored seniors Jenn Cuca and Stephanie Watson in a pregame ceremony.
Louisville jumped to the lead early on in the first game. Helped by a team hitting percentage of .372, the Cardinals took full advantage of each Horned Frog error. Outscoring TCU nine to two at the end, the Cards claimed the game one victory, 30-15.
TCU was able to stay fairly close in the second round until Louisville scored on five straight serves to go from a one-point lead to a six-point advantage at 14-8. The teams traded points, but the Cardinals found ways to distance themselves from the Frogs. TCU pulled to within four at 27-23 on a kill by freshman Hayley Harmon, but Louisville closed the door with the 30-23 win.
In game three, the teams swapped points and leads until near the halfway point. Tied at 13-13, Louisville scored on the next two possessions to take a lead it would not relinquish. As in the first game, the Cards hit over .300 and captured the third game by a 30-20 tally.
"It's hard to see these two (Jenn Cuca and Stephanie Watson) leaving the gym floor," said head coach Prentice Lewis about her two seniors. "They're great people and fun to be around. They're good kids who come from good families. It's been a pleasure to have a year to coach them."
Sophomore Dominika Szabo's 56 attacks for the night ties her for the all-time record for attacks in a three-game match (also: Jill Pape, 56 vs. UTEP, 11/2/96). Szabo also led the team in kills with 18 and one ace. Junior Tori Barlow paced the squad with 34 assists, while Cuca earned 19 digs in her final home showing. Freshman Carissa Mills picked up one ace and was one of four Frogs to tally a single block. Freshman Erin Estep, Harmon and Watson were the other three to earns blocks.
TCU next travels to North Carolina for the last regular season pair of C-USA road matches. The team will take on East Carolina in Greenville on Fri., Nov. 15, then meet Charlotte on Sat., Nov. 16.
