TCU Men Fall to Augusta State in Match Play Semifinals

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The sixth-seeded TCU men's golf team defeated third-seeded Texas by a 3-2 score on Saturday morning, but suffered a hard-fought 3-2 loss to No. 2 Augusta State in an afternoon match at the Collegiate Match Play Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the loss, TCU will play fifth-seeded Arizona for third place at the event, which features the top 16 teams from the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Just as it had in the first round, TCU's victory came courtesy of individual wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots. At No. 3, sophomore J.J. Killeen defeated Russell Surber 6-and-4. Junior Stephen Polanski followed suit in the fourth position, downing J.J. Wall by the same score. Freshman Colby Beckstrom clinched the Frog victory with a 3-and-1 win over Matthew Rosenfeld. TCU pulled away in all three of the matches, which began on Friday afternoon but were postponed due to darkness.
TCU suffered a pair of close losses to the Longhorns in the top two spots, as senior Adam Rubinson fell 2-and-1 to Jason Hartwick, while sophomore David Schultz was defeated 3-and-1 by Rusty Kennedy.
Against Augusta State, it was a reversal of fortune, as Rubinson and Schultz picked up TCU's victories. Rubinson came from behind on the back nine to score a 2-and-1 victory over Oliver Wilson, while Schultz cruised to a 4-and-3 win over Emmett Turner. However, TCU's final three spots were unable to come through against Augusta State. Beckstrom suffered the most heartbreaking loss, as he led by one through 15 holes, but lost the 16th and the 18th to Kalle Edberg for a 1-up loss. Jay Haas defeated Killeen 3-and-1 and Scott Jamieson upended Polanski 4-and-2.
