Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match to Golden Eagles

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU Volleyball (8-9, 0-1 C-USA) dropped a 3-1 heartbreaker to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss (10-7, 2-0 C-USA) on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Sophomore Dominika Szabo posted her fifth career match with 20 or more kills.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first game, with neither team leading by more than five points at any time. The Frogs tied the match at 22-22, then traded point-for-point with the Golden Eagles until TCU was able to advance the lead to two at 27-25. Southern Miss tied the match at 29 all and 30 all, but the Frogs took the game with two kills from Szabo to win 32-30.
Game two was another even round early on, but Southern Miss went on a tear midway through. Leading by as many as seven, the Golden Eagles earned the 30-25 win to tie the match at 1-1 going into intermission.
The third round was all Southern Miss as Amy Truong served three consecutive aces to help the Golden Eagles to an early 8-0 lead. TCU battled back from a 14-point deficit but couldn't finish the rally as Southern Miss took game three, 30-18.
TCU looked in control in the fourth as they jumped to an early lead and then traded points with the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss tied the game at 26, 27, 28 and 29 before earning the hard-fought 31-29 victory.
Szabo led the Frogs with 20 kills and 50 attacks, while junior Tori Barlow posted 37 assists. Four Frogs earned one service ace each. Senior Stephanie Watson led the team with 19 digs. Freshman Erin Estep added five blocks for the evening.
The Tulane Green Wave visits Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Saturday, Oct. 5 for the second half of the Frogs' opening conference weekend. Saturday's match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
