WEST POINT, N.Y. - Rainy conditions and a tougher-than-expected Army team gave TCU trouble before the Horned Frogs got their running game going.
Ricky Madison led the way with 116 yards and a touchdown as TCU overcame seven fumbles and some key penalties to defeat Army 46-27.
TCU (5-1, 2-1 Conference USA) rolled up 265 yards rushing, and Tye Gunn threw for 147 yards and a TD on 12-of-15 passing for the Horned Frogs, who won their fifth straight following a season-opening overtime loss to Cincinnati.
"The offense had to step up for the defense, because the defense has been stepping us for a lot," Madison said. "I can't wait until we play a complete game, where the defense stays up and the offense stays up."
Lonta Hobbs added touchdown runs of 3 and 62 yards for the Horned Frogs.
Reggie Nevels, playing his first game since pulling a hamstring in the season opener, completed 8 of 17 passes for 104 yards and a 27-yard touchdown to Aris Comeaux to lead Army (0-6, 0-4). Nevels also ran for a 2-yard touchdown but threw two interceptions.
The Black Knights are 0-6 for the second time in the last three seasons and only the third time in school history. Army's worst start came in 1973, when it went 0-10.
"We'll keep fighting through it, and there's going to be some good things that happen for this football team," Army coach Todd Berry said. "I still believe that. But we've got to get some things corrected still."
Army was able to stay close thanks to several TCU miscues. The Horned Frogs botched a punt inside their own 5-yard line and had two touchdowns called back because of penalties.
A 3-yard touchdown run by Marcellus Chapman brought Army to 23-20 with 10:16 left in the third quarter. The Horned Frogs got the momentum back when, on Army's next possession, backup quarterback Zac Dahman was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety. Less than three minutes later, Hobbs ran 3 yards for a touchdown to give TCU a 32-20 lead.

"There was a couple of times where I thought they might just pull one out against us," said TCU's Adrian Madise, who caught a 46-yard touchdown in the second quarter. "But we just seemed to be able to rally and come out with a W."
TCU lost only two of its seven fumbles, but their problems hanging onto the ball were a surprise, since the team entered the game seventh in the nation in turnover margin. The Black Knights ranked last in the same category but converted both of their opponent's turnovers into touchdowns.
"We can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win many more ballgames," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "We were very lucky today that the ball didn't bounce, especially on the turf, the opposite way."
After Jones' first-quarter touchdown, the Horned Frogs built a 23-7 lead with field goals of 31, 32 and 33 yards by Nick Browne, and Gunn's touchdown pass to Madise.
TCU's LaTarence Dunbar had a 12-yard touchdown run called back because of a block in the back, and Gunn later had a 14-yard touchdown run called back for holding.
"We had some opportunities," Gunn said. "We had two touchdowns called back, and that could have put a stake in it right there."
