SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The TCU Volleyball (8-11, 0-3 C-USA) team fell in three against the Saint Louis Billikens (13-6, 3-0 C-USA) on Friday at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center. The Frogs will look to rebound in conference action on Saturday, Oct. 12 against the Memphis Tigers.
Game one was tight early on as the two teams were tied at 4-4 until Saint Louis broke out on a run to a 20-8 lead. The Frogs, following their second timeout, battled back to cut the lead to six several times late. The Billikens, however, would not let TCU get any closer and captured the first game by a score of 30-23.
The teams traded points in the early stages of game two, and were tied at 11-11 before the Billikens scored on five consecutive plays to go up 15-11. That would prove to be SLU's biggest lead in the second round. The Frogs rallied to tie the game at 22 all and seven other times in the waning moments of the second stanza. However, in a game that took 68 combined points to decide the Billikens picked up the 35-33 win and a 2-0 lead entering intermission. Senior Stephanie Watson, freshmen Hayley Harmon and Erin Estep helped to pace the Frogs in game two as they hit a combined .700 (14 kills, 0 errors, 20 attacks).
SLU rushed out to a quick lead in the third game, stretching it to as many as 10. TCU fought back to get within three at 29-26 on a kill from sophomore Dominika Szabo, but it was not enough as the Billikens scored on the next play to win 30-26.
"Stephanie (Watson) played well at outside hitter tonight," said head coach Prentice Lewis. "We've just got to play as a team from one to 30."
Szabo led the team with 16 kills and 40 attacks. Freshman Jackie Choi posted 21 assists, while Estep added three aces and two blocks for the evening. Senior Jenn Cuca gave the Frogs 17 digs to lead the team in that category.
TCU continues its road journeys as the team travels to Memphis for an Oct. 12 meeting, then visits Houston on Oct. 18. Both matches are C-USA tilts. The squad's next home stint will come Oct. 25 and 26 when UAB and South Florida come to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
