Scholten Reaches Finals at Met/Rice Indoors

HOUSTON, Texas -- Unseeded, true freshman Daniel Scholten of the TCU men's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Flight B singles at the Met/Rice Indoors on Saturday afternoon. The Wesel, Germany-native began the day with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Prakash Venkataraman of Rice and then followed up the win with one more impressive, straight set victory over another Owl, Ramez Qamer, 7-5, 7-5. Scholten will face the Longhorns' Roger Gubser in the finals tomorrow, January 20. Gubser is seeded No. 2 in the flight.
Freshman Fabrizio Sestini continued to turn heads in the Flight A singles by defeating No. 8 seed Keith From of Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-2, in his first match of the day. Sestini later fell in the semifinals to the No. 2-seeded Travis Parrott of Portland, 6-2, 6-2. Parrott is currently ranked No. 26 in the country.
Freshman Willy Gali, seeded seventh in Flight B singles, won the first set in his match with Texas' Roger Gubser, seeded No. 2, but fell in the next two, 6-4, 6-1, to see his run at the indoors come to an end as well.
The Frogs' doubles pair of freshman Jacob Martin and senior Daniel Wajnberg won their first match of the day in the Flight A doubles win a tough, 9-8, victory over Alex Barragan and Lester Cook of Texas A&M. The pair was later swept by Rice's second seeded twin brothers, Richard and William Barker, 8-0.
Junior Toni Gordon withdrew from the Flight A singles at the beginning of the day due to injury.
The Met/Rice Indoors are TCU's final warmup before they open the season at home on Wednesday, January 30, against cross-town rival SMU at 1:00 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. TCU is currently ranked No. 19, while the Mustangs are sitting at No. 9 in the country.
