CLEVELAND, Miss. - Sparked by eight pool records, TCU's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up a pair of dual meet victories over Delta State and Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at the DSU Aquatics Club. The men (7-2) picked up a 65-47 win over Delta State and 79-23 victory over ULM, while the Lady Frogs (8-1) defeated DSU 69-39 and La.-Monroe 69-41.
The victories, which extended the women's winning streak to eight and the men's run to seven wins in a row, was even more noteworthy due to the fact that the Frogs set the eight pool marks in what TCU head coach Richard Sybesma describes as a "world-class facility."
"For us to break eight records at a pool like that is very important for our program," says Sybesma. "That facility rivals the pools in Indianapolis and Austin, which is where our conference and NCAA championships will be held, so this experience will help us down the road. I'm very proud of our team."
The men were led by freshman Andy Donovan (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral), who captured victory in the 1000 freestyle at 9:38.61 and sophomore divers Chad Hummel (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) and Stephen Gebren (Bedford, Texas/L.D. Bell/LSU) who notched wins in the one- and three-meter competitions with scores of 288.90 and 301.80, respectively. All three marks were pool records.
Not to be outdone, the women picked up five facility records, led by senior Jamie MacCurdy (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) and sophomores Erin Irons (Midland, Texas/Midland) and Codi McLamb (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa), who involved in all five record-setting performances.
Irons led off the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 24.47 leg, while Aimee Moreau (Kenner, La./St. Martin's Episcopal), Andrea Stevens (Enid, Okla./Enid), and MacCurdy rounded out the team, which also set the facility mark. MacCurdy followed with a 2:05.65 in the 200 backstroke to shatter the previous facility best.
McLamb rounded out TCU's assault of the DSU record books by claiming the pool records in both the one- and three-meter dives, with scores of 230.35 and 240.10.
TCU looks to remain undefeated on the road for the season when it travels to North Carolina next weekend for a pair of showdowns. The Frogs take on UNC-Wilmington Friday at 7 p.m. before competing in its first-ever Conference USA dual Saturday versus East Carolina at 1 p.m.
