JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The 15h-ranked TCU Horned Frogs put together a fine day on Saturday to put themselves in position to repeat as tournament champions at The Ridges Intercollegiate. The Horned Frogs shot a 22-under-par 554 on the day and lead the tournament field by four strokes. Adam Rubinson leads the event individually by two strokes with an 11-under-par 133.
On the first 18 holes, the junior from Fort Worth scorched the greens for an eight-under 64. He came back with a score of 69 in the second round to keep his lead and pace the Frogs.
However, right on his heels is TCU teammate Steve Shuert, who finished the first 36 holes with an eight-under 136. Shuert, a senior, shot a five-under 67 in the second round and currently shares third place.
Senior Andy Doeden continued his hot play in the late summer, shooting a four-under 140. He also sits among the leaderboard (8th) after day one. Together, the top-10 trio is hunting for TCU's first individual title since J.J. Henry claimed the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in 1998.
Also playing in the team competition for TCU are senior Bret Guetz (T28th, 145) and freshman J.J. Killeen (T69th, 153). Sophomore Stephen Polanski, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 25th with a 144).
"Our goal was to defend our title," head coach Bill Montigel said. "We played strong today and have put ourselves in a position to do just that. I'm proud of the way the guys came out and competed. Adam's round of 64 was amazing. He's capable of putting up low numbers at any time and just played outstanding today."
Playing in this year's field are 15 teams, including nine ranked among Golfweek's top 25.
