FORT WORTH, Texas - After seven rounds of qualifying, the TCU Horned Frogs' lineup for The Ridges Intercollegiate golf tournament has been finalized. Five TCU golfers will look to help the squad repeat as champions of the season-opening tournament in Johnson City, Tenn., on September 8-9. The Frogs, who were rated among the top 25 the entire 2000-01 campaign, are ranked 15th in Golfweek/Sagarin's pre-season poll.
Senior Andy Doeden gained TCU's first qualifying spot after advancing to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur in mid-August. That performance earned him an automatic berth in the starting lineup, while TCU's 11 other golfers were forced to qualify in a seven-day, seven-course stroke play event.
Junior Adam Rubinson was the Frogs' top finisher with a seven-round score of 491, good for a 70.1 average. Senior Steve Shuert, who placed third in the Fort Worth Men's City Championship over the weekend, took second on the team with a 497. Rounding out the final two spots are senior Bret Guetz (500) and redshirt freshman J.J. Killeen (504). It will be the first collegiate tournament of Killeen's career.
Head coach Bill Montigel, now in his 15th season, also will take one player to the tournament who will compete solely as an individual. A playoff between sophomore Stephen Polanski and true freshman Joe Starzec, who each carded a 515, determined that the individual participant would be Polanski.
"We're excited to get the season underway," Montigel said. "We really want to get out to a good start in the fall and carry that momentum into the spring."
Last year, the 11-ranked Frogs claimed victory in the first tournament of the fall season, finishing first out of 14 teams with a 13-under-par 851. Highlighting last year's field was top-ranked Clemson.
