FORT WORTH, Texas - Following a dominating season-opening victory at The Ridges Intercollegiate two weeks ago, the TCU men's golf team is rated first in the country according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings system. Individually, medalist Steve Shuert and runner-up Adam Rubinson hold the top two spots in the nation.
The Golfweek/Sagarin performance index has TCU with a national-best 67.99 rating. The rest of the top 5 includes Southern California, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Auburn. Based on its team win among the 15-member field at The Ridges, TCU has a 14-0 overall record with a 9-0 mark against teams in the top 25.
Senior Andy Doeden, who is ranked 20th, senior Bret Guetz, sophomore Stephen Polanski and redshirt freshman J.J. Killeen are the other top players for the Frogs.
"It's an honor to be in the top spot," Montigel said. "We had a great showing at The Ridges, but the rankings are computer-generated, so we're being realistic. We'll get a good evaluation of where we stand after the next tournament."
The Frogs are in action in the metroplex on October 8-9 at the Red River Classic held at the Dallas Athletic Club. TCU placed second at the event a year ago.
The last TCU athletic team to be ranked number one during the season was the men's track and field team that finished second in the nation in the 2001 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships.
