STORRS, Conn. - In their final match of the 2001 IKON Husky Classic, the TCU volleyball team battled the tough Minutewomen of the University of Massachusetts, but came out on the short end of the stick, losing 3-0.
The team looked ready to play as they literally traded points with UMass in game one. Freshman Dominika Szabo and senior Marci King had some big impact kills, and the Frogs received quality serving from King and junior Stephanie Watson. The game went into extended play with the Frogs falling short, 33-35.
Game two found UMass getting out to a quick start with a 6-2 lead. The Frogs battled back with key blocks from King and freshman Shannon Brown, but were unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 24-30.
The final game went back and forth with several series scoring runs by both teams. However, once UMass pulled ahead 24-20, the Frogs were able to score only five more points. The match finished with the 30-25 win for UMass.
King was the kills leader (18) and digs leader (14) for the match. Sophomore Tori Barlow led in assists for the third straight match (34). Brown led in blocks (5).
The Frogs head out on the road again as they travel to Texas Tech to take on the Red Raiders in a 7:00 p.m. match on Tuesday, September 3, 2001.
