FORT WORTH, Texas--Horned Frog head coach Bill Montigel has learned that TCU has been selected to compete in the U.S. Collegiate Golf Championships for the fourth straight season. The Frogs, who were nationally rated during the entire 2000-01 campaign, return six of the top eight golfers from last year's conference championship squad.
Twelve teams, including five of the top seven schools in the final 2000-01 Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Team Rankings, are slated to compete in next spring's competition. The list includes TCU, Arizona, Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, Kent State, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Texas and UNLV.
The 2002 U.S. Collegiate will take place for the second-consecutive year at Vista Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Intersport production of the 54-hole event is scheduled for April 5-7, 2002 and showcases some of the top-rated collegiate men's golf teams. The tournament is televised nationally by ESPN.
Vista Vallarta, a newly designed Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, will also be the site of the 2002 EMC2 World Cup Golf Championships. The event is one of four competitions that make up the World Cup Golf Championships.
Northwestern senior Luke Donald won last April's individual competition while Georgia won the team title. TCU placed fifth as a team.
