A full squad of TCU Horned Frogs kicked off their two-a-day practices today on the Morris Practice Fields under sunny skies and temperatures creeping near the century mark. The Frogs officially opened their full camp with an 8:00 a.m. workout, then went back on the field for a two-hour practice at 5:00 p.m.
"The second practice of the first day is usually the hardest practice we go through, in terms of people getting cramps," said TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson. "The first year we were here, we probably had 25 guys on IV's at the end of the day. We only had about five tonight, which shows you what kind of shape these players are in. It's going to be hot for awhile, so we need to get used to it."
The Frogs went through a period in the afternoon where the first team offense and defense matched up against the second team units. Defensive back Marvin Godbolt, a redshirt freshman from San Antonio (Taft) intercepted a pass and helped cause a fumble, while sophomore tailback Ricky Madison (Dallas Kimball) broke a long run to highlight the session.
"The defense is ahead of the offense right now," said Patterson. "We didn't catch the ball very well today. If we're going to throw it more, we have to be able to catch it. We had some guys open, but couldn't catch it. I thought our defense was much more lively in the second practice," continued Patterson. "Godbolt had a nice pick. We need to have some plays like that out of our freshmen. Ricky (Madison) runs a 4.38 40-yard dash, so if you don't get him at the line of scrimmage, he has a good chance to score."
The Frogs will have a light practice on Sunday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m. They will resume two-a-day workouts on Monday, with practices scheduled for 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Frogs open their 2001 season on August 25 when they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Pigskin Classic. Game time is set for noon and the game will be televised nationally on ABC-TV.
