ATLANTA, Ga. - TCU senior Andy Doeden narrowly missed in his upset attempt in the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., on Thursday morning. Doeden, seeded 28th in the tournament, suffered a 1 Up loss to sixth-seeded Camilo Villegas of Colombia in the round of 32.
Doeden led throughout much of the match after claiming victory on the second hole. He upped his lead to two holes after parring number 5 and maintained that two-hole lead until a bogey on the 11th helped Villegas climb within one hole.
Villegas hung in, playing par golf from holes 10 through 18, and evened the match when Doeden double-bogeyed 15. Villegas took his first lead of the contest on the 17th on a Doeden bogey and was able to hang on for the final hole to claim a slim victory. For the match, Doeden posted a better net score than Villegas, 72 to 73, but lost one more hole head-to-head.
The Fargo, N.D., native was attempting to join current professional J.J. Henry as the lone Frogs who have advanced to the final 16 during the last decade. Doeden advanced to the round of 32 after placing 35th in the stroke play event and toppling 27th-seeded Jay Morgan of Wake Forest University in the first round.
Villegas is one of just four of the top 16 seeds who are still alive at the tournament. The championship continues through Sunday's 36-hole final, with the winner earning invitations to play in the next U.S. Open, Masters and British Open. The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
