Doeden Moves into Match Play at U.S. Amateur

ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior Andy Doeden advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur after placing among the top 64 players in the stroke play competition at Druid Hills Country Club in Atlanta, Ga. Doeden qualified for match play for the second time in his career after firing a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday.
His two-round score of 142 (even-par) placed him in a tie for 35th place overall among 312 participants. Doeden, current professional golfer J.J. Henry and former two-time All-American Chad Magee are the only Frogs to advance to the round of 64 in the last decade. As the 38th seed in the tournament, he will play 27th-seeded Jay Morgan of Choctaw, Okla., beginning at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"It's really an honor for him," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He really played well both days, which you must do in a tournament like this. I'm proud of Andy and all of our guys."
TCU and Georgia Tech were the only two colleges in the country to have four players in the U.S. Amateur. Horned Frog junior Adam Rubinson placed second among the Frogs with a five-over-par score of 147. He shot a final-round 73 to move up 49 spots on the second day of play. Senior Steve Shuert shot a one-over 73 to finish in the upper half of the field, landing in a tie for 143rd. Sophomore Stephen Polanski also posted a final-round 73 to leap from 272nd place to 190th with a two-day 151.
The entire match play event will be played at East Lake Golf Club. The championship continues through Sunday's 36-hole final, with the winner earning invitations to play in the next U.S. Open, Masters and British Open. The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
