ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior Andy Doeden leads TCU's quartet of golfers in the U.S. Amateur after shooting an opening-round one-over-par 71 on Monday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Doeden currently sits in a tie for 78th place among the 312 golfers who qualified for the event.
Junior Adam Rubinson is second among the Frogs after shooting a four-over 74 on the opening day. He currently sits in a tie for 159th. Senior Steve Shuert shot a six-over 76 and is in 227th place, while sophomore Stephen Polanski finished with an eight-over-par 78 and stands in a tie for 272nd overall.
The second round of stroke play is set for Tuesday before the field of 312 golfers is trimmed to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play beginning on Wednesday. Doeden will tee off on Tuesday morning, while Rubinson, Shuert and Polanski get underway in the afternoon.
The first two rounds of stroke play are being divided between East Lake Golf Club (7,091 yards, par 70) and Druid Hills Golf Club (6,561 yards, par 72), which are about three miles apart. The shorter Druid Hills will only being used for the stroke play qualifying rounds. Each of the Frogs' golfers played the East Lake Course on Monday.
Bob Godfrey, 27, of Clemson, S.C. tied Vijay Singh's East Lake competitive course record of 63 and erased the U.S. Amateur record of 64 that was shared by Phil Mickelson (Meridian GC in 1990) and Hank Kim (TPC at Sawgrass in 1994). Singh fired a 63 during the 1998 Tour Championship.
On the radar screen are last year's U.S. Amateur finalist, James Driscoll, 23, of Brookline, Mass., and Walker Cup teammate Lucas Glover, 21, of Greenville, S.C., who both registered 64s. Glover, playing at Druid Hills, came within two strokes of the course record that was set last year.
