FORT WORTH, Texas--Senior Andy Doeden, senior Steve Shuert, junior Adam Rubinson and sophomore Stephen Polanski all have qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, meaning that the four TCU golfers will have a busy final month of summer prior to arriving at TCU.
All four Frogs were instrumental in TCU's 2000-01 season. TCU was ranked in the top 25 nationally throughout the campaign and claimed the Western Athletic Conference championship. Each player qualified at a different sectional site this past week.
TCU's seniors were especially impressive as Doeden fired a two-round 141 to finish in first place at the Fargo Country Club in Fargo, N.D., while Shuert carded a 141 at Shadow Glen Golf Course to land in second place in Kansas City, Mo.
Rubinson, a Fort Worth native and all-conference performer, tied for first place at the Holleytree Country Club in Tyler, Texas, after shooting a 36-hole score of 144. Polanski posted 140 to tie for first at Shanandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield, Mich.
"I'm very excited about what these guys accomplished," Horned Frog head coach Bill Montigel said. `To have four players in such a prestigious event is impressive. I'm hopeful that their strong play will continue into the fall season."
The U.S. Amateur will be played from August 20-26 at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga. The Horned Frogs open the fall golf season at The Ridges Intercollegiate in Tennessee on September 8-9, where they will be looking to defend their tournament title.
