Thirteen newcomers went through a two hour practice session, as the 2001 TCU football season officially got underway on Tuesday night.
"It was a good effort for the first day," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "We showed a lot of talent on the field. Junior college transfer Adrian Madise, who's a little older than most, stood out from his wide receiver position. Freshman safety Jeremy Modkins and linebacker Martin Patterson also turned in good first practices."
"I thought it was a good practice," said freshman wide receiver Matt Grimmett. "Things were a lot different than in high school. It was a big change. I think this class has good talent."
"It was very much different than high school," added freshman defensive end Jeremy Breedlove. "The coaches weren't wrong when they told us the tempo would be much faster. We can do nothing but get better from this point on. I'll do whatever it takes to get better and help this team win."
The freshmen will go through two workouts on Wednesday, with practices slated for 9:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The group will be joined by five players who missed tonight's practice to participate in the Texas High School Football All-Star Game. The quintet includes offensive linemen Ben Angeley and Michael Toudouze, linebacker Shawn Brooks, quarterback Tye Gunn and defensive back Mark Walker. Tight end Marvin Pearson did not qualify academically and will not be in camp.
TCU's varsity will report on Thursday, August 2. The Frogs will host their annual Media Day on Friday, August 3, then begin two-a-day workouts on Saturday, August 4. The first full squad practice is set for 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Frogs open their 2001 season on August 25 when they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Pigskin Classic.
