Fresno State Defeats TCU, 11-5

FORT WORTH -- Fresno State's Ben Fritz homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 11-5 win over TCU Friday. The Frogs drop to 31-22 overall, 21-11 in Western Athletic Conference play. Fresno State improves to 34-20 overall, 17-12 in WAC action. TCU now trails league-leading Rice (22-8) by 2.0 games in the WAC standings. The third-place Bulldogs are now 4.5 games behind the Owls.
Fresno State exploded for four runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. Casey McGehee doubled home a run in the fourth and hit a two-run home run in the fifth. Ben Fritz hit a two-run home run in the fourth and Tobey Riday-White added a two-run triple in the fifth. Fritz added a solo home run in the seventh. As a team, Fresno State had 16 hits, including four doubles, a triple and three home runs. McGehee, Garcia and Riday-White each had three hits, while Tony Guzman, Brad Harper and Fritz each had two hits.
Walter Olmstead's three-run home run in the fourth cut the Bulldog lead to 4-3. The Frogs threatened in the fifth and sixth innings, but they were unable to score. TCU loaded the bases in the fifth, but a double play ended the inning, and then in the sixth, the Frogs left a pair of runners stranded. Erick Macha's two-run triple in the seventh closed the deficit to 11-5. Terry Trofholz, Rudy Ontiveros, Macha and Olmstead each had two hits for the Frogs.
Fresno State starter Bob Runyon, who improved his record to 7-1, allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. Jason Gutknecht and Ozzie Gonzalez combined to throw the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run. TCU starter Justin Crowder (7-4) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings to suffer the loss. Chris Frazier allowed four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
The series will conclude with a single-game Saturday, May 5. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
