Baseball Rallies Late To Get Past Fresno State

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Fresno State, 4-3, Thursday at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs improve to 31-21 overall, 21-10 in Western Athletic Conference play. Fresno State drops to 33-20 overall, 16-12 in WAC action. TCU now trails league-leading Rice (22-8) by 1.5 games in the WAC standings. The third-place Bulldogs are now five games behind the Owls.
In the 8th, the Frogs rallied for the three runs on three hits and a hit batsmen. With one out, Terry Trofholz reached first after being hit by a pitch. Rudy Ontiveros singled to right center field, advancing Trofholz to third base. Erick Macha followed with an infield single, scoring Trofholz and closing the deficit to one run. Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett then brought in left handed pitcher Jason Gutknecht to face Tom Bates. After falling behind in the count 1-2, Bates doubled to left center field, scoring both Ontiveros and Macha to give TCU a 4-3 lead. Ontiveros led the Frogs with three hits and two runs scored, while Bates and Macha each had one hit and two runs batted in.
TCU starter Chris Bradshaw (7-4) earned the win, his first since throwing a no-hitter at Hawaii-Hilo in late March. Bradshaw allowed three runs on seven hits, striking out three. Stan Newton pitched a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season. Nick Moran suffered the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits in 7.1 innings.
Fresno State's Oscar Lopez gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. The Frogs answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning on an Ontiveros triple and a Macha sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs increased the lead to 3-1 in the eighth on a Tony Guzman double and a Josh Labandeira sacrifice fly. Oscar Lopez and Brandon Gemoll each had two hits to lead the Bulldogs.
The series will continue with a single-game Friday, May 4. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
