Baseball Team Drops Game to Nevada 7-3

RENO, Nev. -- Nevada pitcher Mateo Miramontes struck out a career high 12 batters as the Wolf Pack defeated TCU 7-3 in a Western Athletic Conference game Sunday afternoon. TCU and Nevada split the four-game series with the Frogs winning games one and three. Overall, TCU is now 22-15, 13-7 in WAC play. Nevada is 20-16 overall, 11-10 in WAC play, 2.5 games behind TCU in the conference standings.
Miramontes allowed only three runs on 12 hits and no walks in the complete game performance. He struck out at least one batter in eight of the nine innings, including two batters in the second, fourth, sixth and ninth innings.
After three scoreless innings, the Frogs scored first with a run in the top of the fourth. Tom Bates doubled and advanced to third on a single by Jason Price. Bates scored on Mike Settle's RBI-groundout, providing TCU with a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Nevada scored four runs on five hits and a hit batsmen, chasing TCU starter David Tombrella. Bo Bryant singled, Alex Rangel was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. Tony Cappuccilli doubled to score Bryant, tying the game at 1-1. Joey Herrera's RBI single gave the Wolf Pack a 2-1 advantage. Michael Hass and Matt Maguire followed with RBI singles extending Nevada's lead to 4-1. Clayton Jerome came on to pitch, replacing Tombrella. Jerome walked one and struck out two to end the inning.
The Wolf Pack extended the lead to 6-1, scoring two runs in the sixth inning on Chris Dickerson's two-run home run. The home run by Dickerson was his fourth of the series.
The Frogs rallied for two runs in the eighth on three hits. Walter Olmstead singled and Jason Price doubled, putting both runners in scoring position for Mike Settle. The TCU third baseman immediately singled to center field, scoring Olmstead and Price. Nevada added an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth on a pair of hit to increase the lead to 7-3.
Price led TCU with four hits, three singles and a double. In the four-game set, Price had nine hits in 15 at-bats, driving in six runs and scoring four runs. Settle had two hits, and drove in all three TCU runs. Tombrella, the losing pitcher, allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Jerome allowed three runs on five hits in the final 4.2 innings.
TCU will next travel to Lubbock on Wednesday, April 11 to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a single-game. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The trip to Lubbock will be the final game of a six-game road trip for the Frogs. TCU will return to the TCU Diamond on Thursday, April 12 to host UTA. The contest against the Mavericks will be the first of five straight home games for the Frogs.
