FORT WORTH - Rudy Riveras two-run single in the eighth inning lifted TCU to an 8-5 win over Nevada Friday at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs improve to 13-7 overall, 5-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. Nevada drops to 8-12 overall, 4-6 in WAC action.
Nevada scored one run in top of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead. Then in the bottom half of the inning, the Frogs reclaimed the lead, scoring five runs on only one base hit, the Rivera single to right field. Trey Crawford and Terry Trofholz walked to start the inning. Pinch hitter Cade Harris reached first, when relief pitcher James Holcombs wild throw on the sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Rivera then singled home Crawford and Trofholz, allowing the Frogs to take a 5-4 lead. With one out and runners at second and third, Nevada elected to intentionally walk Walter Olmstead, who had already singled and doubled twice, loading the bases for Erick Macha. The move backfired, when Macha walked, scoring Rivera. Pitcher John Teepe, who replaced Holcomb, walked Bates to force in another run. TCU added a fifth run on a groundout.
TCU had built a 3-0 lead, scoring an unearned run in the fourth on two hits and a fielding error by left fielder Chris Nickerson, and then a two-run home run by Macha in the fifth. The home run by Macha was his third in as many games.
Nevada got back in the game in the sixth, scoring three unearned runs. The Wolf Pack had three hits in the inning, but fielding mistakes by Ramon Moses and Macha, allowed Nevada to tie the game. Patrick Newburn earned the win in relief. He allowed one runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. TCU starter Chris Bradshaw pitched very well, but failed to earn the decision. He allowed four runs, one earned on 10 hits, two walks and nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Holcomb suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two earned in 0.1 innings. Nevada starter Jason Mackinstosh allowed four runs, three earned on 11 hits, four walks and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Olmsteads three hits and Machas three runs batted in paced the TCU hitting attack. The series will resume on Saturday, March 9 with a single game at 1:05 p.m.
