Baseball Defeats Hawaii With Offensive Explosion

FORT WORTH - TCU exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning to defeat Hawaii, 13-3, Sunday at Rainbow Stadium. The Frogs improve to 16-9 overall, 7-2 in WAC action. Hawaii drops to 8-15 overall, 3-11 in WAC play.
All nine starters had at least one hit and a run scored as the Frogs pounded Hawaii pitching for 18 hits, including seven in the eighth inning. TCU batted around twice in the game, sending 10 men to the plate in the fourth and 12 in the eighth. Twelve of the 18 hits by TCU came in the fourth and eighth innings. Mike Settle had two hits in the eighth, a leadoff single and a two-run double that accounted for the final two runs. The first eight hitters reached base safely in the eighth before the Rainbows recorded the first out on a sacrifice fly by Cade Harris.
When TCU came to bat in the fourth, they trailed 1-0. Walter Olmstead hit a solo home run to right center field to to tie the game. After Hawaii starter Sean Yamashita retired the next two Frogs, he allowed a walk to Harris, consecutive run-scoring doubles to Settle and Jason Price, increasing the TCU lead to 3-1. Ramon Moses then greeted reliever Gavin Garrick with a single to left field, the second of four base hits by Moses.
In two games against Hawaii, Moses has seven hits in nine at-bats, raising his batting average to a season-high .255. Terry Trofholz (2-5), Rudy Rivera (3-5), Erick Macha (2-4), Settle (3-5, 3 RBIs), Moses (4-5) all had at least two hits in the contest.
TCU starter Justin Crowder gave the Frogs 6.2 solid innings. He allowed three runs on 10 hits to earn his fourth win of the season. Relievers Clayton Jerome and Chris Frazier shutout the Rainbows in the final 2.1 innings.
Hawaii jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a pair of doubles in the second inning. Pat Scalabrini added a solo home run in the fourth, and then Gary Ahu singled and scored on Gregg Omoris single in the fifth, closing the deficit to two runs.
The Frogs took the series opener, 8-5 on Saturday. As a team, TCU has 54 hits in the last three games, including 12 home runs. The final game of this three-game series will be held Monday, March 19. First-pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Hawaii time (10:35 p.m. central time.) Following Monday's contest, TCU will next travel to Hilo, Hawaii for a three-game series vs. the the Vulcans. The Hilo series will begin Thursday, March 22.
