Fort Worth - The Frogs won the opener, 14-2, then took game two, 6-1. TCU received complete game performances from pitchers Chris Bradshaw and Justin Crowder, allowing the Frogs to sweep a doubleheader from Hawai`i-Hilo. The Frogs improve to 6-5 overall, 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. Hilo drops to 3-10 overall, 2-3 in WAC action.
In the opener, Bradshaw held the Vulcans to two runs on five hits, allowing single runs in the second and eighth innings. The senior right-hander walked three and struck out four to raise his record to 2-1 this season.
TCU broke the game open in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Crowder, who served as the designated hitter in the opener, doubled and scored on Walter Olmsteads single. After a Hilo balk by pitcher Ben Siff, Olmstead came around to score on a Tom Bates base hit. Jason Price added a double, scoring Bates, and then with two outs, Austen Watkins singled to left center field, driving in Price.
The Frogs added one more run in the fifth, then four in the sixth. In the sixth, TCU picked up a pair of walks and three hits, the biggest a two-run single by Bates. With Crowder on second and two outs, Hilo elected to intentionally walk Olmstead. After a wild pitch moved both runners over, Bates drilled a line drive to left center, increasing the TCU lead to 10-1. Olmstead led the Frogs with three hits, three runs, two RBIs and a pair of walks. Rivera, Crowder, Macha, Bates and Price each had two hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, Crowder matched Bradshaws performance on the mound. The junior lefty held Hilo to one run on four hits, striking out eight. He did not walk a batter in the contest as he improved his record to 2-0 this season. Crowder was perfect thru the first four innings, then allowed a pair of base hits in the fifth. The lone Hilo run came in the seventh on a pair of hits and a groundout.
In game two, Hilo again struggled to retire Olmstead. The sophomore first baseman drove in three runs on two hits, including a two-run home run in the seventh. In the doubleheader, Olmstead was 5-of-7 with four runs, five RBIs, two walks and a stolen base. Rivera added two more hits in the game, plus Macha scored twice.
The series will conclude with a single game on Monday, Feb.19 at the TCU Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
