Kansas Beats TCU, 7-3

Round Rock -- Kansas starter Pete Smart held TCU to three hits in 6.2 innings, leading the Jayhawks to a 7-3 win Friday in the Express College Classic. Kansas is now 1-0 this season, while the Frogs drop to 3-4.
Smart kept the TCU bats in check, holding the Frogs to three hits and three walks, while striking out seven. TCU stranded a total of nine men on the bases, including two in the first, seventh and eighth innings.
Kansas picked up two runs in the fourth inning on a two-out bloop base hit down the right field. The Jayhawks increased the lead to 4-0 in the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits, a TCU error and a wild pitch. KU then increased added three more runs in the ninth on three base hits, the biggest being a double by Casey Spanish. John Nelson, Doug Dreher and Justin Davis each had two hits for Kansas.
TCU finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning as the Frogs scored three runs on five hits. Mike Settle, Jason Price and pinch hitter Greg Bratton delivered three straight basehits to load the bases. Settle scored when Rudy Ontiveros grounded into a double play. Rudy Rivera singled to score Price, then Justin Crowder doubled to scored Rivera. Crowder led the team with three hits, while Rivera and Price each had two hits.
TCU starter Chris Bradshaw pitched well, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings. Bradshaw struck out six and did not walk a batter. TCU will return to action on Saturday, when they face future C-USA rival Charlotte at the Dell Diamond. Game time is 6 p.m.
