The TCU Horned Frogs (7-3) return to action Tuesday, December 18, when they host SMU (5-4) at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Tipoff for the non-conference game is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. The game will be televised locally by ESPN Regional on KSTR Channel 49. The Frogs are coming off of a 91-85 win over Southland Conference member Texas-San Antonio on Dec. 15. The Frogs have won the first three games of a seven-game homestand. Later this week, TCU will host Appalachian State (Dec. 20) and North Texas (Dec. 23). The Ponies have won two of their last three games, including a 82-64 win over Oral Roberts last Friday.
Radio/TV: The SMU game can be heard on KMKI Disney Radio 620 AM or KTCU (88.7 FM) with Jeff Williams (play-by-play) and former TCU basketball letterman Herb Stephens (analysis) describing the action. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional on KSTR Channel 49 in the Fort Worth-Dallas area. Brian Estridge and Tom Apke will call the action.
Billy Tubbs: One of the nation's winningest coaches, Billy Tubbs is in his 8th season at TCU and his 28th overall as a head coach. His career record stands at 586-285, which places him 12th among the NCAA's winningest active coaches. Tubbs needs only 14 wins to reach the 600 victory plateau. Only 35 coaches have won at least 600 games in their respective careers. While at TCU, Tubbs has recorded a win-loss mark of 147-83. He is assisted by Brian Fish, Rob Flaska and Scott Edgar.
Home Sweet Home: Under Billy Tubbs, Daniel-Meyer Coliseum has developed into one of the more difficult places for opponents to play. Since arriving in Fort Worth, Tubbs' coached teams have posted an impressive 98-20 mark at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, plus they are 2-0 in games played at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Last season, the Frogs recorded a 15-1 win-loss mark at Daniel-Meyer.
Conference USA Preseason Poll: The league head coaches have picked TCU to finish fifth in the National Division of Conference USA. Preseason top-25 team Memphis is picked to win the National Division, while Cincinnati is the top pick in the American Division. South Florida is picked to finish second in the National Division, and they are followed by UAB, Southern Miss, TCU, Houston and Tulane. Charlotte is picked to finish second in the American Division, followed by Marquette, Louisville, Saint Louis, DePaul and East Carolina.
TCU vs. SMU: This is the 177th meeting between these Metroplex rivals in a series that dates back to 1919. However, this will be the first meeting between TCU and SMU as non-conference rivals. The Frogs trail in the overall series, 79-97. However, TCU has won four straight against SMU, and 10 of the last 11 overall. Last season, TCU posted a pair of wins over SMU. The Frogs defeated SMU, 100-91, in Fort Worth, and then ended the regular-season with a 84-76 win in Dallas. Since Billy Tubbs arrived at TCU prior to the 1994-95 season, the Frogs are 13-2 against SMU.
