FORT WORTH, Texas - On the strength of 13 victories in 16 events, the TCU women's swimming and diving team rolled over metroplex rival North Texas 157-130 Friday night at the Rickel Center. Senior Jamie MacCurdy (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) led the way by notching three wins for the Horned Frogs.
TCU got off to a slow start, claiming only one victory in the meet's first three events, a convincing win in the 200-yard medley relay. MacCurdy sparked a rally by winning the 100 backstroke in :59.54, the first of 10-straight triumphs for the Frogs. MacCurdy also tallied wins in the 200 butterfly (2:14.25) and 100 freestyle (:54.00) during the TCU run. Also claiming multiple victories for TCU were junior Melissa Powell (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley), who won both the 100 (1:09.29) and 200 (2:24.65) breastroke and sophomore Erin Irons (Midland, Texas/Midland), who notched first place in the 50 (:24.42) and 500 (5:08.38) freestyle.
"This was a big win for us," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma. "North Texas is a rapidly improving program and they made it tough for us to claim our first win of the season, but we were able to swim well and come away with a victory."
TCU's women (1-1) will return to action next Friday night, Novmber 9, versus its third-straight in-state rival, Austin College. The men's sqaud takes on nationally ranked SMU Wednesday, November 7. Both meets are slated for 7 p.m. at the Rickel Center.
