Top Frogs
The Horned Frogs held the top spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance ratings system for nearly four full weeks after winning The Ridges Intercollegiate in September. TCU currently is rated eighth according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Poll and seventh in the Golfworld Coaches' Poll.
Twice as Nice
TCU won two events during the 2001 fall season, making it the first time since the fall of 1997 that the squad won two tourneys in the same semester. Last year's Frog team claimed victories at The Ridges in the fall and the WAC Championships in the spring. In addition, TCU has finished among the top 3 in four of five events.
Senior Frogs
TCU's senior trio of Andy Doeden, Bret Guetz and Steve Shuert all placed among the top 5 at the 49er Collegiate Classic. Shuert took second, Guetz grabbed third and Doeden finished fifth.
A Chip Off the Old Block
Junior Adam Rubinson has placed in the top 20 in four of the first five tournaments of the year. He was in the top 10 in the opening three events, finishing second at The Ridges, third at the Gary Koch and tied for 10th at Red River. He is currently ranked 34th individually according to Golfweek. Rubinson is the son of TCU's head soccer coach and former Frog soccer player Dave Rubinson.
Guetz Cracks Top 100
Senior Bret Guetz moved into 96th position in the Golfweek individual rankings after back-to-back fine finishes to end the fall. His third-place showing at the 49er Collegiate was the best of his career.
Oh Ya Betcha
After advancing to the round of 32 of the U.S. Amateur match play, Fargo, N.D. native Andy Doeden's hot streak has continued into the fall season. He has finished in the top 20 in all five fall tournaments, twice landing among the top 10 three times. Doeden is the 36th-ranked player in the country following the fall slate.
J.J. Can Play
After redshirting his freshman season, former Texas 5A state champion J.J. Killeen has been impressive, finishing with two top-20 placings (T-15th at Red River, T-18th at Gary Koch). He also has a pair of near misses, placing 21st on two occasions.
The Other J.J.
Former TCU star J.J. Henry is having a stellar season on the pro tour. The three-time All-American (1996, 97, 98) finished among the top 60 on the PGA Tour money list, and made over $1 million during the year.
Star-zec Freshman to Redshirt
According to head coach Bill Montigel, TCU's top freshman, Joe Starzec, who hails from Branford, Conn., has elected to redshirt this season.
