INDUSTRY, Calif. - Paced by three top-5 finishes, the seventh-rated TCU men's golf team claimed its second victory of the year on Friday at the 2001 49er Collegiate Classic. TCU entered the final round trailing UCLA by two shots, but pulled away the competition with a solid score of 285 to defeat second-place Toledo by 12 strokes.
"It's a great way to go into the spring season," head coach Bill Montigel said. "We've gained great experience this fall because we've been playing with the lead groups on the final day. We always want to have a chance to win it on the last 18 holes and these guys have done a great job of getting themselves into that position. I can't say enough about these seniors. This is a really special group."
TCU's trio of seniors were indeed the story of the tournament. Steve Shuert recorded a 67 on the final day to earn sole possession of second place at the event. His score of four-under was just one stroke behind the individual medalist, Alan Murray of Toledo. Shuert was eyeing his second individual crown of the season after he won The Ridges Intercollegiate in September.
Fellow Frog senior Bret Guetz captured third place individually by shooting even-par 71s in each of the three rounds. It was the best finish of his TCU career and Guetz's first top-10 placement of the fall.
Finally, Andy Doeden kept his perfect top-20 streak alive for the season, as he grabbed fifth place at the event with a 54-hole score of 217. Doeden once again showed his consistency, shooting rounds of 73, 72 and 72.
Junior Adam Rubinson had a share of 17th position with a 10-over 223, and now has registered four top-20s in TCU's five events. And for the second straight tournament, freshman J.J. Killeen barely missed the top 20 with a 21st-place score of 224.
TCU has now concluded its 2001 fall slate, which ranks as one of the most successful in school history. The Frogs will next be in action at a February tournament in Hawaii.
