FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team (5-11, 2-4 C-USA) posted its first-ever win over Southwest Texas State (7-10, 4-4 SLC) Tuesday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Senior Marci King earned her 50th career double-double for her efforts during the match (17 kills, 21 digs).
TCU took the early lead in game one before letting the Bobcats creep back into the game. However the Frogs fought back on the other side, to take the lead at 26-25 on a kill by freshman Dominika Szabo and ultimately take the first game by a score of 30-28.
Game two was a point-for-point battle throughout. The Frogs managed to take a slim lead just past the midpoint of the game, but SWT stayed in the hunt until TCU took over on the serve for game point following a kill by sophomore Courtney Beach. On an attack error by SWT, the Frogs took game two 30-26. This marked the second time this season the Frogs have led the match going in to intermission, the other match ended with a 3-2 win over North Texas.
Following intermission, the Bobcats came out on fire, taking a lead by as many seven throughout much of the third game. The Frogs tied the game at 27 all, but were unable to capitalize as they dropped game three 30-28.
SWT took the lead from the get-go in game four. The VolleyFrogs battled back to pull within two late in the game (27-29) on a kill from Beach, but the Bobcats took the game 30-27 to tie the match at 2-2 and force the fifth game.
SWT jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before TCU scored on a kill from senior Allison Lynch. The Frogs played catch-up from that point trailing the Bobcats by one or two points throughout most of the game, until they tied the score at 11 after a pair of kills from King. The Frogs fell behind again until they tied the game at 14, then scored the final two points on a block assist from Lynch and junior Jenn Cuca followed by a kill from Cuca to win the game 16-14.
"That was some of the ugliest volleyball I've ever seen - on both sides of net," said head coach Sandy Troudt. "We played really well from 25 to 30 in the first two games, never were in the third game, the fourth game was touch-and-go, and when we switched sides in the fifth, we were able to swing some of the momentum."
"Marci (King) had some super serving in the fifth game, and Jennifer Sebastian came off the bench and had some good numbers for us tonight. We put Stephanie Watson in the last three games to get some game time, and she played well for us. Jenn Cuca was just incredible - her match-saving block at the end was awesome. Domi (Szabo) led the team in kills playing with a sore back that I didn't find out about until the third game."
TCU was led in kills and attacks by Szabo with 19 and 39 respectively. Senior Lindsay Hayes dished out 35 assists, while King posted 21 digs and four aces to lead the squad. Lynch had six blocks to lead the Frogs for the fourth straight match.
The Frogs' homestand continues with a 7:00 p.m. conference match against the University of Houston on Saturday, October 13 at the Rickel Center. TCU finishes its homestand with matches against non-conference Sam Houston State (October 17) and conference foes Charlotte (October 19) and East Carolina (October 20). All matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Rickel Center.
