Fort Worth - TCU basketball coach Billy Tubbs announced Monday the 2001-2002 men's basketball schedule. The Horned Frogs will play 30 regular-season games, including 18 home contests. A tough non-conference slate, plus an always challenging Conference USA schedule highlight the 2001-2002 schedule.
Highlighting the list of non-conference opponents are home games against Baylor, SMU and Creighton. In addition, the Frogs will travel to Lubbock to face longtime rival Texas Tech in an ESPN nationally-televised contest.
The Frogs will open the season on Friday, Nov. 16 in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, where they will host Northwestern State. The contest is a seeding game for the Las Vegas Invitational, which will be held Nov. 19-21 at Valley High School. The first-year tournament will include TCU, Oklahoma State, Providence, UTEP, Siena, Northwestern State, Austin Peay and Arkansas-Monticello.
After returning from Las Vegas, the Frogs will host Louisiana-Monroe (Nov. 25) and Southwest Texas State (Nov. 28) before travelling to Lubbock to face Tech (Dec. 1). TCU will then play seven-straight home contests, beginning with Creighton (Dec. 4), Lenoir-Rhyne (Dec. 8), Texas-San Antonio (Dec. 15), SMU (Dec. 18), Appalachian State (Dec. 20), North Texas (Dec. 23), Baylor (Dec. 29). The Texas-San Antonio and Baylor contests will be played at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Northwestern State, Providence, Oklahoma State and Creighton played in the NCAA Tournament, plus UTEP, Baylor, Southern Miss and Memphis played in the National Invitational Tournament.
During Conference USA play, the Frogs will compete in the National Division, facing Houston, Memphis, South Florida, Southern Miss, Tulane and UAB both home and away. Plus, TCU will play four cross-over games against teams from the American Division. TCU will travel to Louisville and Marquette, and will host DePaul and East Carolina.
TCU begins Conference USA play at South Florida (Jan. 5). The Frogs return home to face preseason favorite Memphis (Jan. 9) in an ESPN2 nationally-televised contest. Three of the next four league games are on the road as the Frogs travel to Louisville (Jan. 12) and Houston (Jan. 15), then host Tulane (Jan. 19), before travelling to Marquette (Jan. 23).
Four of the next five games will be at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum as the Frogs will host Southern Miss (Jan. 26), UAB (Jan. 29), DePaul (Feb. 6) and Houston (Feb. 9). The Memphis contest (Feb. 2), the lone road game in the middle of that five-game stretch, will be an ESPN+ broadcast.
After a road game at UAB (Feb. 12), TCU will return home to host South Florida (Feb. 16). The Frogs then depart on a two-game trip as they travel to Southern Miss (Feb. 23) and Tulane (Feb. 26). The regular-season finale will come at home against fellow newcomer East Carolina (Mar. 2).
The Conference USA Tournament will be held March 6-9 in Cincinnati, Ohio. TCU has a pair of exhibition games scheduled for Nov. 5 and 8 to unofficially start the 2001-02 season. Game times and local television arrangements have yet to be finalized.
