FROGS OPEN BIG HOMESTAND
The Horned Frogs are happy to be back in Fort Worth, as they are coming off three straight conference road games. Since they last played in the friendly confines of the DMC, the Frogs dropped a 94-82 decision at Fresno State, nipped Nevada by an 89-88 count in Reno, then fell at Tulsa on Wednesday by an 82-66 margin.
In their last outing, the Frogs were within one of the Golden Hurricane early in the second half, but Tulsa used a stingy defense and got a "career" game from Kevin Johnson to seal the victory. TCU shot just 35.9 percent from the floor in the contest and only Derrick Davenport (21) and Greedy Daniels (16) tallied in double figures in points. Davenport added 13 rebounds for his sixth "double-double" of the season and blocked five shots. Meanwhile, Johnson hit for 30 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked eight shots for the Golden Hurricane (11-6, 2-2).
TCU has enjoyed playing at home this season, as they've won all nine games at Daniel-Meyer. The Frogs' home court winning streak has stretched to 15, including a victory at the Fort Worth Convention Center over Texas Tech in December. Head coach Billy Tubbs has TCU playing "Billy Ball," again this season, a style that uses an aggressive, pressing defense and an attacking offense. The Frogs are the nation's top scoring team at 95.1 points per game and have been over the 100-point plateau eight times this season, including a season-high 141 in a win over Central Oklahoma. Since Coach Tubbs took over the TCU program in 1994, the Frogs are 52-1 when they score 100 or more points. Now in his 27th season as a head coach, Tubbs has compiled an overall record of 572-276, including a 133-74 mark since coming to Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs are back in action Wednesday when they host Grambling.
SCOUTING RICE
The Rice Owls make their way to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum for a WAC matchup on
Saturday.
The Owls are 9-6 on the season and have opened the WAC campaign with a 1-2 mark. That is a marked improvement from last season, one in which they won just five of 27 games and went 1-13 in conference play. They opened the season with five straight wins but have dropped six of their last 10. In the conference they have a win over Nevada and losses to Fresno State and, most recently, SMU by a 72-54 score on Thursday in Dallas.
Now in his ninth season at his alma mater, head coach Willis Wilson owns a 112-126 record guiding the Owls' basketball program.
Senior guard Mike Wilks leads the Owls' attack. The 5-11, 180-pounder from Milwaukee is averaging 20.2 points per game, second in the WAC. The Owls suffered a blow when starting guard Omar-Seli Mance was lost for the season due to stress fractures in both legs.
This series dates back to 1919 with Rice holding a slim 86-83 advantage. The Frogs hold a comfortable 46-31 lead in games played in Fort Worth and have won three straight over the Owls, including an 85-62 win here last March.

TCU has led many of the statistical categories in the WAC. The Frogs are the WAC's top team in points (95.1), scoring margin (+17.0), three-point field goals made/game (9.8), rebounding average (41.9), assists (19.6), steals (12.6), turnover margin (+7.0), assist/turnover ratio (1.4) and offensive rebounds (15.7). Individual leaders include Thomas McTyer (assist/turnover ratio-3.0); Derrick Davenport (blocked shots-2.9), Greedy Daniels (assists-5.6, steals-4.6 and three-point field goals made-2.7) and Ryan Carroll (three-point field goals made-2.7).
BOMBS AWAY
TCU hit nine-of-24 three-point field goals in their loss at Tulsa on
Wednesday. TCU has launched 30 or more shots from beyond the arc six times
this season, including a school record 36 three-point attempts in the win
over Central Oklahoma. To put that in perspective, coming into the season
they had recorded just seven games in which they put up 30 or more
three-pointers in their history (four coming last season). Through 18 games
they have taken 452 three-point shots, an average of 25.1 attempts per game.
They've hit 176 of those three-pointers, 38.9 percent accuracy, or an
average of 9.8 made three-pointers per game. Greedy Daniels (133), Ryan
Carroll (123), Bingo Merriex (80) and Thomas McTyer (59) have taken the
majority of the long-range missiles.
HIGH-SCORING FROGS
TCU is averaging 95.1 points per game, tops in the country. The Frogs have
gone over the century mark eight times and have scored more than 90 points
11 times. They have scored 100 or more points in seven of nine home games
and are averaging 104.1 points at DMC. They have surpassed the 100-point
plateau 53 times since Coach Tubbs took over the program in 1994. The Frogs
are 52-1 when scoring 100 or more points since Tubbs came aboard. The lone
loss was a 111-104 setback to Baylor on Feb. 14, 1995. Last season, TCU
averaged 87.9 points per game to rank second in the nation. The Horned Frogs
led the nation in scoring in both 1995 and 1998 and have led the WAC in
scoring in all four years in which they've been members.
CARROLL CLIMBS
Ryan Carroll continues his assault on the TCU all-time scoring list. He has
scored 334 points this season, an average of 18.6 points per game. In the
process, he has moved into ninth place on the all-time list with 1,301
career points. He needs 22 points to tie Mike Jones for eighth on the
all-time list. He could easily finish as one of the top five scorers in TCU
history (see chart).
THREE POINTERS TOO
Ryan Carroll has moved into second place on TCU's all-time three point field
goals made. He has connected for 205 three pointers, trailing only Michael
Strickland (231).
GREED(Y) IS GOOD
Greedy Daniels has moved into second place on TCU's single season steals
list with 83 in just 18 games. He averages 4.6 steals per game, tops in the
nation. The Division I record for steals in a season is 150, set by
Oklahoma's Mookie Blaylock in 39 games in 1988. Daniels earned WAC Player of
the Week honors January 2 after producing back-to-back 20-point games. A
member of the 1999 WAC Mountain Division All-Defensive Team, Daniels also
set a school and WAC record with 12 steals in the game vs. Arkansas-Pine
Bluff, just one shy of the NCAA record held by Blaylock. The previous TCU
record was seven, accomplished several times. Daniels collected his dozen
thefts despite playing just 19 minutes. Daniels also tied a school record
with 16 assists vs. Central Oklahoma.
DOUBLE DOUBLES
Derrick Davenport grabbed 13 rebounds to go with 21 points in the loss at
Tulsa. It was his WAC-leading sixth double-double of the season. Myron
Anthony is right behind with five double-doubles. Bingo Merriex and Marlon
Dumont have each added one double-double to the team's total of 13.
RECAPPING TULSA
The Frogs shot a season-low 35.9 percent from the field in their sixth
straight loss to the Golden Hurrican...TCU was held to 66 points, just one
higher than its fewest points this season (65 vs. San Jose State)...The
Frogs had a season-low two players in double digits in points.
