For the tournament, TCU fired a three-round total of 851 (13-under par), edging South Carolina (854) by three strokes for the victory. The Horned Frogs and Gamecocks were the only schools to shoot under par at The Ridges Golf Course. Top-rated Clemson placed third at the invitational, shooting an even-par 864.
"It's a great start for our program," Head Coach Bill Montigel said. "It was a really strong win for us. Clemson was ranked number one and there were eight other ranked teams in the tournament. It's always nice to beat teams of that caliber."
TCU led from start to finish thanks to a sizzling 36-hole effort on Saturday. The Frogs opened with a tournament-best round of 279 over the first 18 holes and followed up with a second-round total of 280.
Red-shirt freshman Adam Rubinson and senior Scott Volpitto paced the Horned Frogs, as their scores of 212 (4-under par) tied them for third place individually. Rubinson and Volpitto each had low rounds of 68, just three strokes off the course record. Also anchoring the Frogs were senior Aaron Hickman (214), sophomore Jamie Kellam (219) and junior Andy Doeden (220). Junior Bret Guetz did not participate in the team standings, but finished tied for 24th overall with a 218.
"I'm extremely pleased with the result," Montigel said. "Our goal was to go in and win the tournament, but it's a tough sport and you never know what's going to happen. Adam and Scott really stepped it up and played super, but it was a total team effort. We had some low scores across the board."
TCU aims for its second win in as many events when the team travels to Toledo, Ohio, for the first-ever Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational on September 18-19 at the Inverness Country Club, the site of four previous U.S. Open Tournaments.
