Rice Takes First Three From Baseball Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas (May 20) - Rice defeated TCU in a suspended game, then swept a
doubleheader from TCU to claim the first three games of a four-game set this
weekend at the TCU Diamond. The Owls are now one win away from claiming at
least a share of their fourth consecutive WAC baseball title. The series opener on Friday was suspended in the fifth inning with the Owls on top, 7-0. The two teams completed the game Saturday with the Owls winning, 11-1. Rice scored six runs in the first two innings Friday on losing pitcher Shawn Thompson (6-5). When play resumed Saturday, the Owls had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth. Designated hitter Jesse Roman greeted reliever Mark Hamilton with a doubled down the right field line, clearing the bases for the Owls. Roman led the Owls with four runs batted in on two hits. Jerry Van Noy had three hits and drove in two runs. Kenny Baugh earned the win, improving his record to 11-2. Baugh held the Frogs scoreless in five innings. He allowed four hits, one walk and five strikeouts. TCU's lone run came in the seventh inning when Levi Groomer was hit by reliever Tony Adler with the bases loaded, scoring Shaun Wooley. Groomer increased his TCU single-season school record total for hit-by-pitches to 25. Wooley had three of TCU's seven hits. The Owls were the home team in the opener, due to game three in Houston being rained out. In the first game of the doubleheader, Marc Gwyn held TCU to six hits and one walk, striking out 10. Gwyn improved his record to 7-6. Chris Bradshaw allowed the Owls to score three runs on four hits in the first inning, dropping his record to 5-7. Bradshaw allowed nine hits, three runs, three walks and four strikeouts in the complete game performance. In the first inning, Brett Smith doubled, Eric Arnold singled and then both scored on Jason Gray's home run to center field. Six different Frogs had one hit in the contest. In the nightcap, Rice pitcher Jon Skaggs improved to 11-2, holding the Frogs to three runs in 7. 2 innings. He allowed six hits, four walks and struck out 10. TCU starter David Tombrella allowed seven runs in 3.0 innings. He allowed seven hits and four walks. The Owls jumped out to a 8-1 lead, scoring three times in the second, twice in the third and three more runs in the fourth. TCU reliever Chris Frazier held the Owls to one run in the final six innings. Ackal led the Owls with four hits and catcher John Lukin added three hits and two runs batted in. The Frogs were led by designated hitter Dane Phillips, who had three hits in four at-bats, driving in one run. Jason Price hit his third home run of the year. In the series, the Owls are hitting .353 (36-102), compared to TCU's .207 (19-92). The three starting pitchers for the Frogs have allowed 16 earned runs 12 innings. The Owls improve to 40-20, 19-10 in the WAC. The Frogs drop to 21-34 overall, 11-18 in the WAC. The series will conclude with a single-game Sunday at 1:05 p.m. |
