Baseball Defeats Southwest Texas, 8-3

ROUND ROCK, Texas (May 14) - In the first NCAA Division I college baseball game at the new Dell Diamond, TCU defeated Southwest Texas State, 8-3. The Frogs improve to 21-31 this season, while Southwest Texas drops to 29-27.
Every Frog reached base at least once, including Levi Groomer who led the Frogs with three hits. Shaun Wooley and Jason Price each had two hits Groomer and Brad Rogers drove in two runs each.
Southwest Texas scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings. The Frogs tied the game in the third on two hits, a double by Groomer and a two-out single by Wooley. In the fourth, the Frogs took their first lead of the game on two hits, a Southwest Texas error and a pair of sacrifices. Matt Srp drove in one run on his first sacrifice fly of the year and Groomer picked up an RBI on two-out base hit.
The Frogs broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits and two walks. Jeff Reed started the inning with a walk, advanced to third on Srp's base hit, then scored on Walter Olmstead's ground out. Groomer drove in Srp, then scored on Rudy Rivera's double. Rogers drove in the final two runs of the inning on a two-out double down the right field line, scoring Rivera and Wooley, who had reached on a walk.
David Tombrella pitched the first five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits to earn his third win of the year. Chris Frazier and Chad Durham combined to pitch the final four innings, allowing one run on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Kyle Rutherford suffered the loss for Southwest Texas.
TCU will next host WAC rival Rice in a four-game series at the TCU Diamond. The series opens Friday, May 19 with a single-game at 2:35 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 12 noon, and then conclude the series with a single-game Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
