Thompson Leads TCU Baseball Past Hilo, 2-1

FORT WORTH, Texas (Apr. 14) -- Shawn Thompson pitched TCU's first complete game of the year to lead the Frogs to a 2-1 win over Hawaii-Hilo Friday at the TCU Diamond. TCU improves to 16-25 overall, 7-9 in Western Athletic Conference play. Hilo drops to 14-25 overall, 6-10 in the WAC.
Thompson allowed one run on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts in nine innings. He faced the minimum 16 hitters in the final 5.1 innings to earn his fourth win of the year. The only Hilo base runner in the final five innings was caught stealing.
Hilo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring their lone run in the first inning. Brian Rooke singled, stole second and advanced to third on Jacob Ryan's sacrifice bunt. Rooke scored on Keola Park's sacrifice fly to center field. Hilo did not have a runner reach third base the rest of the game.
The Frogs tied the game in the sixth on Erick Macha's leadoff home run. Hilo starting pitcher Thomas Ford had kept the TCU bats in check, allowing only two hits in the first five innings - both by freshman third baseman Mike Settle.
TCU took the lead in the seventh on a pair of hits. Brad Rogers doubled to left center and advanced to third on Jason Price's sacrifice bunt. Marshall Wilson singled home Rogers to give the Frogs their first lead of the game.
Ford allowed two runs on five hits in the complete game performance. He struck out seven and walked two.
TCU won the opener on Thursday, 11-5. The series will conclude on Saturday, April 15. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
