FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Marquise Gainous scored 25 points and led a closing 32-10 run as TCU defeated crosstown rival SMU 92-75 Saturday night.
Gainous and true freshman swingman Bingo Merriex combined for 18 points during the run, helping TCU overcome a 65-60 deficit with just eight minutes remaining.
Merriex finished with 16 points, hitting four of his five 3-point attempts. Derrick Davenport added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Damon Hancock led SMU with 22 points. Willie Davis scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but Jeryl Sasser was held to 12 points. Davis and Sasser, who average more than 35 points a game combined, made just 8 of 30 field goal attempts. As a team, SMU was 35 percent from the floor.
