FORT WORTH (Dec. 29) - Senior guard Diamond Jackson scored 19 points in 22 minutes of action to lead four Horned Frogs in double figures as TCU scorched Columbia, 101-51, in women's college basketball Wednesday night.
TCU (8-5) also got double-figure scoring games from Janice Thomas with 16, Amy Sutton with 15 and Jill Sutton's 13. All 11 Horned Frogs scored and all but one grabbed at least two rebounds on the night. It marked the first time since Dec. 11, 1997, TCU had scored 100 or more points in a game. Thomas topped TCU in rebounds with eight.
Columbia (1-7) had only one player reach double digits, as Shaunte Edmonds posted 11 points. Edmonds also hauled in eight rebounds for the Lions.
TCU never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 25 points in the first half, en route to a 45-23 intermission advantage. In the second half, the Frogs increased the lead to as many as 51, and cruised to the final score.
"I have been really pleased with this group in the way they come off a break very focused," said TCU head coach Jeff Mittie. "To come out and play with intensity and respond so well after not playing since Dec. 22 is very good.
"I was extremely pleased with the way our bench played tonight. It was by far the best they had finished a game this season, and they played well both offensively and defensively. We got solid scoring from our reserves and showed some improvement. That kind of performance adds to their confidence and my confidence in them."
After playing just three games in the past 16 days, TCU will turn around and host South Alabama at 2 p.m. Friday, 40 hours from the end of the Columbia game.
"South Alabama is a much more athletic team than is Columbia, and they play a very physical style of game. I expect our players to respond very well with a game so close to this one. School is out, and there's lots of down time, so I think everyone would rather be playing than practicing or be idle. I anticipate a good workout Thursday and this team to be ready and focused on Friday, concluded Mittie."
