Dennis Franchione On...
The 2000 recruiting class:"It is a small, but quality class. We raised the bar another notch with this group of athletes. We signed seven or eight state top 100 selections and two national top 100 players, which is something that we had not been able to do until this year. We met the position needs that we were looking for. We lost two quarterbacks from last season, so it was important to sign several quarterbacks. We also needed to add bigger tailbacks and wide receivers, and the players we signed fit that description. The 1999 class was deficient in safeties, so we placed a high priority in that area. Plus, we also have added another solid group of defensive linemen."
The importance of recruiting in the Metroplex:
"We feel like it is important to sign the top local athletes, and we were able to do that this season. For the second consecutive year, we have signed the top defensive lineman in the Metroplex, plus we have also signed some of the top skill players in the area. We have worked hard to keep the top players at home. Plus, we have received a lot of support from the high school coaches over the last two years."
The impact of winning the WAC title and back-to-back bowl games:
"Winning the WAC title and a second bowl game enhanced our ability to put together a class of this quality. We have a lot more credibility than we did two years ago. Players recognize that this is a program on the upswing."
What Others Are Saying:
Brandon Johnson:"My family has been my biggest supporters. I could play somewhere and have a great career, but I wouldn't have them to share it with. I can stay close and play for a program that is on the rise."
Reggie Harrell:
"To come in and turn a losing season around into a winning season like that is great. They have got a good staff there. The coaches know what they are doing, and they are just as excited as we are."
Geoff Ketchum, Lone Star Recruiting:
"It has been a long time since TCU has been able to recruit the Metroplex this effectively. They have a staff that appears to enjoy recruiting. They have a certain passion for it. And, they've been able to achieve their No. 1 goal, which is to win the Metroplex. They've done that. They've locked that down and made it their area. If they can continue to do that, they're going to have great classes every year. If you look at some of the players they have landed, they've had to beat out some of the top programs in the nation. I think teams are a little surprised because these are battles they wouldn't have lost in the past. And, they're losing them this year."
