Baylor knocks off Baseball, 8-3

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 18) - Ross Bennett and Jaime Bubela combined for six hits, leading Baylor to a 8-3 win over TCU Friday at the TCU Diamond. TCU drops to 4-7, while the Bears improve to 6-2.
The Bears took a six-run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a single run in the third and fifth innings, and four runs in the fourth. In the fourth, Kelly Shoppach walked, Steve Dorneman singled, putting runners at first and third. Preston Underdown followed with a triple to right center field, driving in both runners. Before the inning was over, the Bears would add two more runs, increasing the lead to 6-0.
The Frogs would finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth on a two-run home run by Levi Groomer - his second home run of the season. TCU added a single run in the seventh on a Groomer RBI-single to right field. On the play, Bubela threw out Jason Price at the plate, the second time in the game he had thrown out a TCU baserunner at home. Ramon Moses reached on a Baylor error, advancing Groomer to third. But, the Frogs ended up leaving runners stranded at the corners as Greg Bratton grounded out to end the scoring threat.
Baylor starter Chad Hawkins held the Frogs to three runs, two earned on eight hits in 6.2 innings, recording his second win of the year. Kyle Edens shutout TCU in the final 2.1 innings, earning his first save of the season.
TCU starter Chris Frazier suffered the loss for the Frogs. Frazier struck out eight in seven innings, but he allowed six runs on nine hits.
The contest was the first between the two schools since the Southwest Conference folded in 1996. Overall, it was the 275th meeting in baseball between the two teams. The series will resume Saturday at the Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
