FORT WORTH, Texas (October 8, 2000) -- The TCU men's soccer team pulled off a stunning upset Sunday afternoon, October 8, as they defeated the 11th ranked and defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Bears of Southwest Missouri State 1-0. It was the Frogs second win over a ranked opponent this year. TCU defeated then #25 Bradley last Sunday, October 1, 2-1 in overtime. The men's soccer team is now 2-0 against ranked opponents this season and 3-1 against the last four ranked teams they have faced, which includes last year's 1-0 win over then #22 SMU.
During the first half of play, TCU failed to capitalize on a penalty kick that was awarded in the 13th minute of play. The shot was taken by senior midfielder Matt Groves, but SMS senior goalkeeper Mark Modersohn correctly guessed which side Groves shot the ball and saved the penalty kick.
SMS continued their aggressive offensive style of play in the second half and outshot TCU 13-1 in the second and 21-6 for the game, but the Frogs made their one second half shot count in the 85th minute of the game when junior midfielder Andy Gray scored on a cross from sophomore midfielder Nick Browne.
TCU sophomore goalkeeper Michael Lahoud improved his record to 5-5 on the year and 2-2 in the Missouri Valley. The win was also his fourth shutout of the year.
SMS had a 1999 record of 17-1-3, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Alabama-Birmingham 2-1 in the NCAA Soccer Championship. The loss today was Southwest Missouri State's second consecutive, as they fell on Friday, October 6, to #6 SMU. SMS is now 7-3-1 on the year and 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 6-5 on the year and evened their conference record at 2-2. Their next MVC match will be against the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky at Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m. The Frogs return home on Friday, October 20, to continue conference play against the Belmont Bruins at 3 p.m.
