Whitaker, a senior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. (Rancho Cucamonga HS), rushed for a career-high 278 yards on a personal-best 34 carries and scored three touchdowns (two rushing and one receiving) in a 57-48 victory at Hawai 'i. He gained 213 yards in the second half and scored on a 45-yard run with less than four minutes left for the final score of the game. Whitaker is now second nationally in rushing with 178.7 yards per game.
Moodley, a freshman from Garland, Texas (Garland HS), made eight tackles (four solo), picked off two passes and broke up two more in SMU's 21-7 victory over Nevada. He stopped one Wolf Pack drive inside the SMU 30 with the first interception of his career and returned it 20 yards. He returned the second interception 24 yards. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Mustangs.
Kaylakie, a senior from Austin, Texas (St. Michael's HS), kicked three field goals of 24, 22 and 34 yards and converted all four of his extra point attempts in a 37-0 win against Rice. Kaylakie also replaced injured punter Joey Biasatti and averaged 38.3 yards on three punts with a long of 45 yards.
Other offensive nominees included junior quarterback David Carr, Fresno State; freshman quarterback Timmy Chang, Hawai'i; sophomore wide receiver Johnnie Freeman, SMU; senior running back LaDainian Tomlinson, TCU; and junior receiver Donald Shoals, Tulsa.
On the defensive side, nominees included senior nose tackle Thabiti Lockhart, Fresno State; senior linebacker Rinda Brooks, Hawai'i; and junior linebacker Chad Bayer, TCU
There were no other special team nominations.
