Aztecs Rally to Defeat TCU, 63-51

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 5) --- San Diego State outscored TCU 27-5 over the last eight minutes, and made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch, to rally for a 63-51 decision over TCU in women's college basketball Wednesday night.
The Aztecs (4-8) held the Horned Frogs scoreless over the last 3:20 of the game, outscoring TCU 13-0 over that span for the win.
TCU (9-6) held a 46-36 advantage following a three-point field goal by Tricia Payne with 8:46 remaining. San Diego State went on a 12-0 run to take a 48-46 lead at the 5:36 mark. The Aztecs would move to a 50-48 advantage with 3:34 to play. Jill Sutton's three-pointer at 3:20 would give the Frogs their final lead at 51-50, and the team's last points on the evening.
Payne topped all Horned Frogs with 17 points, as Jill Sutton added 12. Payne and Diamond Jackson each grabbed five rebounds.
Mary Apiafi paced the Aztecs with 21 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. She got help from Anita Bundage with 13, and Shannon Lee and Jamey Cox, who each tallied 10 points on the night.
San Diego State was 19-of-24 at the free throw line, while the Horned Frogs cashed in 4-for-5 at the stripe and did not attempt a free throw in the second half.
TCU travels to Tulsa on Jan. 8 for its Western Athletic Conference opener.
