FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 1) - Junior Janice Thomas scored 18 points and hauled in 18 rebounds to lead TCU over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 86-59, in women's college basketball Wednesday.
Thomas, a transfer from West Los Angeles College, reached career-best in both points and boards, and picked up the first 'double-double' by a Horned Frog in 1999-2000. The 18 rebounds ranks as the third-highest single-game total at TCU, and the most caroms for a Frog since Janice Dzuik grabbed 19 versus UT-Arlington in 1988.
TCU, 4-1, also got 18 points from senior Diamond Jackson and 13 from Sally Spencer. The Horned Frogs held a 50-29 halftime advantage after connecting on 18-of-36 from the field, including 6-for-10 on three-point attempts. In the second half, TCU could manage just 28.6 percent from the floor, on 10-of-35 shooting, and just 1-of-13 on treys.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 0-3, shot just 32.8 percent from the field for the game (19-of-58) and committed 22 turnovers. The Golden Lionettes never got closer than 16 after the 12 minute mark of the first half. Cherbritta Scott topped UAPB with 14 points, while Kenya Lockhart added 11 and Stacie Wood chipped in with 11.
The Horned Frogs host the Cook Children's TCU Hoops Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Arkansas State and Jackson State play the 6 p.m. game on Friday, with TCU taking on Colgate in the nightcap at 8 p.m. The consolation game will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with the championship tilt to follow at 8 p.m.
