Preston Kuznof sets javelin school record
FORT WORTH – TCU track and field kicked off its outdoor season at the TCU Alumni Invitational with a bang, earning 15 event victories and watching one school record fall.
The Frogs didn't waste any time, starting the outdoor season with a bang on Saturday morning. Mckenzie Bailey won the women's 5k with the eighth fastest time in school history (16:39.08), followed by four of her teammates, as five of the top six finishers in the race were Frogs. On the men's side, Johnson Lagat paced the field with a 14:24.81 (eighth best in TCU history) and went one-two-three with his teammates.
TCU's indoor 60m hurdles record holder Amari Kiluvia started her outdoor campaign with a massive PR, dropping nearly a second to win the 100m hurdles. Her time of 13.30 ranks as the third fastest ever by a Frog.
The success continued for the women in the 400m as TCU swept the top three spots. Samarra Monrroy took the event win in 54.43, followed by Iyana Gray (55.13) and freshman Morgan Maddox (55.56).
Destin Drummond led the men's 400m runners on the afternoon, placing second overall with a lifetime best of 47.32. Dominic Byles and Jordan Parker each finished behind him inside the top five.
After a strong rookie indoor season, London Tucker lit up the track in the women's 100m dash. The freshman ran a blistering 11.19, tied for the third fastest performance ever in school history. Her time also ranks among the nation's best so far this season. Sophomore Teanna Harlin finished second (11.46), just a hundredth off her career-best time.
Freshman sprinter Joseph (Finn) Dunshee made quite the impression outdoors in front of the home crowd. He finished third overall in the 100m (10.46) and won the 200m (21.07) later in the meet.
Georgia Scott earned her first event victory of the outdoor season, winning the 800m with a PR of 2:09.69, the eighth best mark in TCU history. Sasha Crawford placed second (2:10.89), giving the Frogs a one-two finish.
Sophomores Amelliah Birdow (58.00) and Jayden Douglas (51.95) won the women's and men's 400m hurdles, respectively. The two school record holders in the events defended their home track and crossed the finish lines first in their signature events.
All four of the Frogs' relays on the day earned first place finishes. Both of the 4x100m relays crossed the line first, including the women, who posted the seventh fasted time in school history, running a 43.73. The men's and women's 4x400m relays closed out the meet with wins to help cap off a strong day on the track.
In the field events, Benjamin Kirbo won the pole vault, clearing 5.30m (17-4.75). Freshman javelin thrower Preston Kuznof also won his event, needing only one throw, the first of his collegiate career, to place first and shatter the school record with a mark of 75.10m (246-5.00).
The Horned Frogs are back in action March 27-29 at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
