Frogs hit at best mark in conference play since 2012
FORT WORTH – Looking to bounce back in conference play, No. 22 TCU responded with an emphatic 3-0 sweep of Arizona on Friday night in Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) grabbed their first win in league play this season behind a strong offensive effort. TCU dominated the Wildcats (11-2, 0-2 Big 12), hitting at a .388 clip, its best mark against a conference opponent since 2012 (.442 vs. West Virginia). As a team, the Frogs also won the serve and pass battle, racking up nine aces and siding out at a 73.1 percent rate.
Melanie Parra accounted for 21.5 of TCU's 52 points on the night, finishing with a double-double (17 kills and 10 digs). The senior also made an impact with four aces and a block. Redshirt freshman Becca Kelley was errorless, tallying 10 kills on 15 swings for a career-high .667 hitting percentage. Jalyn Gibson finished just one kill shy of double digits with nine and added three aces.
It was all TCU in the first set. The Frogs easily scored the first three points of the match and never looked back, hitting a whopping .571 in the first. Leading by six at the media timeout, TCU continued to pull away and extend its lead to 10 as Kelley and Parra each totaled five kills in the set. Gibson finished it with a kill and an ace to help the Frogs take the opening set 25-15.
Arizona played the Frogs closer in the second. The Wildcats fought to take an early 12-10 lead, but Parra sparked a 4-0 run that would prove to be the difference. TCU took control of the second set and used three aces from Lily Nicholson, Gibson and Parra to increase the lead to six and go up two sets to none with a 25-19 victory.
Seven unanswered points early in set three was the dagger. Parra picked up back-to-back aces at the service line and Gibson and Kelley contributed kills to make it 10-4 in favor of the Frogs. They only continued to pour it on and run away with the third set, scoring the final six points in a row to cap off the sweep with a 25-16 win.
No. 22 TCU hits the road for the first time in Big 12 play and nearly a month on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when the Frogs take on Houston at the Fertitta Center at 7 p.m. CT.
