LEXINGTON, Ky. – Melanie Parra was named to the inaugural watch list for the AVCA's 2024 Division I Player of the Year Award, presented by Nike Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
The list includes 36 players from 21 schools, featuring some of the top talent in the nation. The names will be revealed in groups of 12 over three days — from Wednesday, Sept. 18, to Friday, Sept. 20.
No stranger to AVCA recognition, Parra became the first player in Division I women's volleyball history to earn back-to-back National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 10 & 17), helped No. 23 TCU receive a national ranking for the first time in program history and was a 2023 Third Team All-American.
Through eight matches this season, Parra's offensive prowess has been on full display. She leads the nation with 5.48 kills per set and 6.29 points per set and is doing so against some of the best teams in the country, including Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Parra has logged double-digit kills in every match in 2024, including five with 20 or more. The senior from Sinaloa, Mexico, racked up 34 kills in No. 23 TCU's win over UCLA, 30 in a five-set upset of the 18th-ranked Gophers and broke a nearly 24-year-old school record for kills in a three-set match, finishing with 23. She is also the first player to win three consecutive Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week titles to start the season since 2020 (Logan Eggleston, Texas) and is one of just three players in conference history to accomplish the feat.
The Watch List will be narrowed down in November, and then the names of the finalists will be released before the AVCA Convention. The 2024 AVCA Player of the Year will be announced on Friday, Dec. 20, in Louisville, Kentucky, during the AVCA Convention.
