Horned Frogs hand UT Arlington its first loss of the season
FORT WORTH – No. 23 TCU volleyball handed undefeated UTA its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, sweeping aside the Mavericks in straight sets inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) handled business at home, picking up their third sweep in the last four matches. TCU never trailed on the night, outhitting the Mavericks (9-1, 0-0 WAC) by a whopping .469-.083 mark, thanks in part to only seven errors offensively and 10.5 total blocks. It marked the seventh-highest hitting percentage in a match in program history.
Jalyn Gibson paced the Frog attack with 15 kills on just 26 swings. The sophomore was on fire out of the gate, hitting at a .462 clip on her own. Back-to-back AVCA National Player of the Week Melanie Parra added 12 kills on a nearly .400 hitting percentage, and redshirt freshman Becca Kelley rounded out the three-pronged attack with nine kills on just 13 swings. Lily Nicholson guided TCU to its best hitting percentage in the Jason Williams era and highest since 2014 (.532 vs. Grambling State).
Defensively, it was the freshman Alice Volpe leading the Frogs with 11 digs, her second straight match in double-figures. Middle blockers Alexis Roberson and Sarah Sylvester gave the UTA hitters fits all night at the net, registering six and three blocks, respectively.
Kelley and Parra set the tone with two easy kills to start the match. The Mavericks hung with TCU for the first seven points, knotting the score up before Kelley and the Horned Frogs went on a 7-2 run to make it 14-9. Up by five at the media break, Gibson turned it on at the service line as TCU scored 10 unanswered points and took the first set 25-11.
The Frogs opened up the second with a 5-1 run, forcing UTA to burn an early timeout. The reset paid off for the Mavericks as they were able to claw back within one, but it wouldn't last long as a 9-2 burst put TCU back in control 17-7. UTA never quit in the set, but it was too late as the Frogs closed it out 25-17 to take a two-set lead in the match.
Gibson and TCU kept their foot on the gas in the third and final set, capping off the sweep. The Frogs made quick work of UTA thanks to a blistering .636 clip as a team in the set. Three aces from Cecily Bramschreiber, Nicholson and Parra highlighted the onslaught. In the final moments of the match, freshman Evan Hendrix checked in to record her first two collegiate kills, tooling a block and slamming down an overpass. TCU built up a 13-point lead to win the set 25-12.
No. 23 TCU takes a quick pause in action, picking up the Horned Frog Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20 against Denver at 6:30 p.m. CT.
